What is Insatbility of the shoulder?
Shoulder instability is a condition in which the shoulder is looser than it should be, giving rise to pain and loss of ability to use the upper limb in an effective manner. This most commonly affects sports persons, though it can happen to any one.
In some poeple, the shoulder dislocates repeatedly, and then this is known as a recurrent dislocation. Many do not have this magnitude of problem, but rather some sense of looseness, and a feeling the shoulder might come out in certain actions like throwing, opening the back door of the car while in the driver's seat, or while attempting to lift a weight form the ground.
There are people who dislocate their shoulder off and on without ever having hurt themselves. Such people, though uncommon, are better with physiotherapy, while those that have their instability due to some injury or some sporting accident generally need surgery to restore full strength and function of their shoulders.
If instability, in any of its form, is a trouble you have, consult a shoulder surgeon for proper work up and suggestions on further course of action.
